Before purchasing a ticket

Three things to compare before booking

When travel is urgent, the cheapest-looking ticket may not be the best option for your schedule.

01

Match the dates and airports

Check the exact departure date, local times, destination airport, and how far you will need to travel after landing. A nearby airport may be an option, but include the ground transportation time and cost.

02

Check connections and timing

Compare nonstop and connecting flights. Leave enough time for check-in, security, international connections, and any terminal or airport transfer. Review entry and transit document requirements for your route.

03

Compare the full ticket cost

Check baggage allowance, seat selection, change or cancellation restrictions, and any third-party service fees. Confirm the final amount and fare conditions before you pay.

Already holding a ticket? If your airline canceled your flight, check its free rebooking offers before purchasing a separate flight. A new reservation does not automatically cancel or refund the original one. See our canceled-flight guide.

Leaving today or tomorrow?

What matters most for a last-minute flight?

Prioritize an itinerary you can actually make, not just the first available price.

Check whether you can reach the airport in time

Look at the airline's check-in and bag-drop deadlines as well as the scheduled departure. A seat shown online may not be practical if you cannot complete airport formalities in time.

For international travel, check passport validity, visas, and any transit requirements with official government and airline sources.

Understand your connection risk

A shorter connection is not automatically a better option. Check whether the itinerary uses one ticket or separate tickets, whether a terminal change is required, and what happens if an earlier leg is delayed.

If a separate ticket is involved, missed connections may carry different risks and costs.

Before paying: Make sure the traveler name matches the required travel document. Review the airline or seller's confirmation and ticket-issuance process so you know when a booking is actually ticketed.

Booking rules

Can you cancel a newly booked flight within 24 hours?

The U.S. 24-hour airline booking rule has important conditions and does not cover every purchase.

Tickets booked directly with an airline

For eligible airline bookings made at least seven days before departure, the airline must generally offer either a 24-hour free cancellation and refund option or a 24-hour reservation hold at the quoted price. The airline does not have to offer both.

Tickets purchased through a travel agent

The U.S. federal 24-hour airline cancellation-or-hold requirement does not apply to tickets booked through travel agencies or other third-party sellers. Check the seller's cancellation policy and any fees before booking.

These protections are not a general right to change a flight for free, and booking within seven days of departure may be treated differently. Check the U.S. Department of Transportation's buying-a-ticket guidance for the current rule. Already have a ticket you may cancel? See our flight booking cancellation guide.

Common booking questions

New flight booking questions, answered

Can I book a flight for today?

Sometimes, if an airline still offers a ticket and you can meet its check-in and boarding deadlines. Availability can change quickly, so check the current schedule and total cost before buying.

Will a phone call guarantee an available seat?

No. Availability and ticket prices are controlled by airlines and ticket sellers. An independent travel service may discuss booking options, but cannot guarantee a specific fare, seat, or departure.

What information should I have ready before I call?

Have your preferred dates, departure and destination airports, number of travelers, flexibility on nearby airports or connections, and any special travel requirements ready. Share sensitive payment information only through a verified, secure payment process.

Do new flight bookings have extra fees?

They can. Fees may include baggage, seating, optional airline services, and third-party booking charges. Ask for the final amount and applicable conditions before authorizing payment.

If my original flight was canceled, should I buy a new ticket right away?

First check whether your original airline offers a suitable rebooking at no extra cost. A separate purchase could leave you paying for a new ticket while your original booking is unresolved. Read the cancellation checklist.
